Joint Research Centre

The mission of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre (IES) is to provide scientific-technical support to the European Union's policies for the protection and sustainable development of the European and global environment.

Through its research actions, the IES supports a large number of European policies and programmes related to the environment including, among others, the Water Framework Directive, the Thematic Strategies of the 6th Environment Action Programme, the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE). In the area of landscape planning and forestry, IES is in charge of the development and implementation of European information systems such as the European Forest Data Centre (EFDAC) and the European Forest Information System (EFFIS). IES maintains close collaboration with the the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in the areas of Sustainable Forest Management, and the Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forest in Europe (MCPFE – Forest Europe).
